Sean Taylor

CD - Calcutta Grove

Play 90 second soundbite of 'Revelations' @ 'CD quality'

'Calcutta Grove' is Sean Taylor's amazing new album release; more desolate sounding contemporary blues tinged songs in pretty typical Sean Taylor stripped-back but damn cool fashion. An excellent piece of work that although perhaps not truly commercial in the 'hits' sense, has everything it needs to be a 'fringe' and/or cult success.

Taylor's blues are generally down-beat and pretty down-trodden sounding; at times reminiscent of the more morose side of John Martyn in his ability to reach-out and 'touch' the listeners heart, Taylor hits the spot and jangles the nerves. Taylor's instrumental originality is also shown to pretty good effect here; Taylor's brilliant use of reverb and echo add an eerie and compelling 'cry' to his guitar work and his percussive Martyn-esque style gives a nicely syncopated thump behind his impassioned 'voices'. Taylor's music is cleverly simplistic but extremely enjoyable for all its honesty and grit - not exactly up-lifting work it has to be said but, if you like your contemporary blues to be urban and somewhat dark then 'Calcutta Grove' is something you should be looking out for!

As I listen to 'Calcutta Grove' I picture the man, the musician, sitting cross-legged on a stool, head bowed, eyes closed and completely lost in, but totally in sync with, his music. This man clearly really feels and lives in his words and his beautifully poised accompaniment, whether it be guitar, piano or harmonica, is not simply a means to an end but a total necessity in order to reach that heavenly place where he is at ease, and at one with his songs. This is as electrifying and goose-bump generating stuff from a very talented and inspiring musician.

'Calcutta Grove' by Sean Taylor is a quite exceptional piece of work; Taylor awakens dark emotions and tests the senses with his wonderfully heart-felt songs - 'Calcutta Grove' aint gonna be for the average man-in-the-street though, this is one for the real purist who gets off on another man's musical creativity and poetic honesty, one for those prepared to listen well, one for those able to truly drink in someone's passion and use what he/she hears to perhaps reflect and move on. 'Calcutta Grove' by Sean Taylor is stunning in its simplicity and brilliant in its composition - an absolute gem of a work - fanbloodytastic!!
