Play 90 second soundbite of 'Hey Hey' @ 'CD quality'
This is a no frills musical outing! Very low-key, almost low-fi, no whistles and bells, no big productions, no studio re-workings. 'Angels' by Sean Taylor is very much a wysiwyg work; beautifully understated, supremely honest and breathtakingly compelling. Sean Taylor is quite obviously a great songwriter but it's his whole approach to musical reality that I really admire - his ability to get his music across without going to great lengths to refine and over-do things. 'Angels' is special! 'Angels' is a breath of fresh air! 'Angels' is simply stunning!
Taylor's passion for gritty originality is excellent and it's his complete disregard of everything 'digitally enhanced' that really makes a difference here - 'Angels' is pure, genuine and nicely 'grubby'. Taylor oozes out his vocals with stunning blues empathy and he never once sounds anything but natural - and it just works so well. Of course, blues of any sort will struggle to make it big-style - but, I can't help but think that what Sean Taylor is doing here has as much chance of being picked up as anything currently out there. Some of the tracks on 'Angels', such as 'Tony Blair', 'Travelling Late' and 'The Underworld' aren't that far removed from what Damien Rice had great success with over the last few years. If it happened for Rice, surely it could happen for Taylor - it's all about exposure and getting that lucky break and this guy deserves to be discovered.
I am absolutely thrilled to be in a position to be able to 'experience' such, as yet undiscovered, talent as Sean Taylor. Likewise, I consider myself honoured to be able to write about such artists and their work. 'Angels' by Sean Taylor is inspirational nu-blues, blues with an optimistically commercial bent, blues for the future - a superb album that deserves to be heard and enjoyed for exactly what it is - real, honest-to-goodness, down-home brilliance!
