Single - Bad Boys

Is it hip-hop, is it rap or gangster-rap and does it really matter anyway? Scrabull sounds to me like proper street music - whatever the sub-genre, whatever the 'wise' name, Scrabull gives it from the heart with words from deep down, all straight-arrow, plain and simple.

Street-music or not, 'Bad Boys', the debut single by London nu-urban poet-rapster Scrabull, is certainly down and dirty; a little 'old-hat' maybe but none-the-worse for its 'timeless' and well tried and tested approach. 'Bad Boys' is gritty musical reality and hard-edged poetic poignancy as Scrabull croons out his heartfelt words in throaty London-ish patois pretty typical of the form. However, I'm not sure whether Scrabull has missed the boat somewhat with his cultured 'gang' songs - Scrabull certainly gives it good, loud and proud and there'll be plenty of takers for his work but, I'm not too sure if this is really 'hit' material of our time!!

There's nothing at all innovative about Scrabull's 'Bad Boys'; the subject matter is fairly typical of the form, the delivery is formalised, angst-ridden staccato and the observational aggression in the lyrics is pretty predictable in sentiment if not in actual words. However, Scrabull certainly demonstrates his street-angst as well as his penchant for poetic commentary and playful youthful ebullience. 'Bad Boys' by Scrabull could prove to be a minor hit and has the potential to pave the way for more Scrabull wares in the future - a good but not brilliant starter for Scrabull!
