Play 90 second soundbite of 'Secret' @ 'CD quality'
This 'lyrical/acoustic' lass from Oxford certainly has an unusual voice and I think that's what probably took me some time to get into. Lyrically, compositionally and instrumentally, Sarah Warne has all the qualities of a young Carole King; if this single is anything to go by, Warne writes with great sensitivity and she scores her music with sympathetic emotion and well judged proportion. 'Secret' is a bit of a grower - it does take a while to get the whole Sarah Warne thing and because of that her song suffers a little.
There's no doubting that 'Secret' is a damn fine song and it is beautifully mixed and produced resulting in an end product that's well balanced, mature and pretty convincing. Warne's vocal qualities are somewhat naively childlike - I don't mean that to sound bad, it's just that her voice is bloody unusual. Hey come on, there's been many successes with such individual voices; Kate Bush and Katie Melua to name but two - both unusual, both managed to win the hearts and souls of millions around the world - so there's no reason why Sarah Warne shouldn't be able to do the same.
'Secret' by Sarah Warne is not a work that has absolute instant appeal - it is however damn radio friendly and should get plenty of airings in all the right places. Good promotion and plenty of radio play will be the springboards required for Sarah Warne's 'Secret' to become triumphant - I wish her well - she's obviously a very talented young lady and she just needs a bit of luck to get it all started. Nice work but just falling a bit short methinks!
