Sack Trick

@ The Marr's Bar, Worcester - 14/7/01

All dressed in (French onion sellers) striped tops (and tights?) and wearing a variety of silly, no sorry, strange hats, Sack Trick just begged to be watched. Opening the unusual (it has to be said) set with Antarctica and moving on swiftly to the title track from their last album, 'Penguins On The Moon' they proceeded to blast their way through an immaculately performed routine of fine music and cavorting. Other gems followed such as 'Microwave Sweetheart', 'Blue Ice Cream' and many more that I didn't get the title of because they just ripped through them at such a pace.

They reminded me of (for those old enough to remember) The Mothers Of Invention at their best, with more than a hint of The Bonzo Dog Do Dah Band (ditto concerning age) with a bit of Madness thrown in for good measure. Monty Python is also another good analogy; this was quite an interesting night and I know that I wasn't the only one with a bemused but interested look on my face. In fact, apart from the few who obviously knew their material (and danced?), I think everyone else was just a little shell shocked. From the moment they kicked off, they didn't stop; they just blasted their way through. This cannot be good for your health - I wouldn't leave the room to go to the little boys room for fear of missing something.

Can they play though? Ooohhhh yes, they certainly can. They leave you almost breathless from laughter and sheer delight, wanting more. Would I pay to see them again? Oooohhhh yes!!
