Robbo Robinson

CD - Destinations

Play 90 second soundbite of 'My Friends Told Me' @ 'CD quality'

I suppose Robbo Robinson could be 'Guilty' of being quite 'Smokey' (no more clues!!) with this short but sweet new work. A well put together six tracks with a distinctive blues feel.

Opening gently but impressively with a 'My Friends Told Me' and some nifty guitar work using just the right amount of delay to give a great feel. Robbo's talkin' vocal style matches the guitar work with its easy, laid back kind of vibe. A good choice for starters!

'Destinations' follows and as it opens there's a distinct Dave Draper feel to the production (which can't be a bad thing). A nice, short guitar solo and a gentle riff midway following some beautifully handled backing vocals. Probably more commercial than the bluesy opener.

Slide dobro kicks 'Flatline On Nathan Brown' off and returns to a more blues influenced thingy. Well structured, some great stuff going on in the background, more talkin' vox from Robbo and yet another shortish but catchy solo.

'Lookin' For The Buffalo' uses American Indian drum rhythms behind some impressive guitar licks and jangly chords. Robbo whispers his words along with some 'sampled' voices and occasional coyote howls. The superb, pulsating rhythmic feel gives a great controlled and real easy feel.

Following a short intro, 'My (Long) Black Car' roars in with kick-ass, heavy blues guitar. Some great riffs lace through the vocals before an impressive fx laden solo kicks in shortly returning to the main riff.

'Miami Vibe' starts with a Hendrixesque riff before settling into its punchy vibe. Sampled voices lead to and from the first solo before returning to the main theme. A second solo blows away against more 'Miami Vice' style samples before fading to end.

Robbo Robinson's style is heavily influenced by American blues/rock. Much of his lyrical work relies on American experience. His use of American Indian rhythms is always good to hear. Generally, Robbo Robinson is just about the most American Worcesterite I know. There's no doubting his guitar skills. Vocally, well actually, he's not the best vocalist in the world (a fact I'm sure he's aware of) but he uses what he's got well and it works with the Americanesque themes. 'Destinations' is a well thought out work, impressively put together if a little on the short side.
