Play 90 second soundbite of 'Drinking Den' @ 'CD quality'
- quite right too, Rieser don't fit just one bill so why should they be stuffed into an overused category with the more mundane and less talented!
Regardless of genre or persuasion, Rieser straight away scream 'quality'; this guitar driven foursome seem to know and understand the 'ropes' and use all of their individual and collective prowess to lay down something just a bit better than most could manage. The vocals rise and swell above the electric backdrop with great confidence and easy power; never sounding at all strained or stretched Chris Blair manages his throaty God-given gift quite magnificently. Blair's rhythmic guitar work is beautifully proportioned to add colour and depth to the precision bass of Mike Edie and the ever-so-precise drums of Graeme Chyla. Lead guitarist Greg Jones sticks very much to the essentials and never forces his deft guitar work to interfere with the overall unity and solidarity of the band. Add to all of that the tasty harmonies (at times up to three-part!) and you've got yourself a very tidy, very professional, mature sound. Rieser play very much as a unit; there's no showy solo stuff goin' on, no big ego trying to push the others out of the way, just four guys doin' what comes naturally and doin' it extremely well, and together.
Ok, so we've established that the guys can play but they still need the creative resources to be able to do the job properly; well, Rieser excel in that department too; 'Drinking Den' offers the listener four well written and beautifully crafted songs that sit comfortably within the realms of indie/rock but have the occasional underlying nuances of 'trad folk' propping up the more contemporary sound - oh it's subtle but it's there if you listen hard enough - and it works. 'Drinking Den' by Rieser consists of the title track plus 'The Actor', 'Call Me Round' and 'The Ringmaster', it's a polished and proficient release that showcases the professionalism and musical maturity of Rieser - four great tracks from a crackin' sounding outfit!!
