Rictus

CD - Regrets

Play 90 second soundbite of 'To See You' @ 'CD quality'

Just last night I had the good fortune to bump in to this young trio of awesomely talented lads. They performed three of their self penned, pacey pieces and blew me away with their abilities and stage presence. A few words to the guys after their stint and I had their album in my sticky mitts.

Regrets is a remarkably good work from a band so young in years. All still fifteen and with the world at the doorsteps these lads have a potential that's frightening. Their performance last night wasn't just competent it was tremendous. This album just backs up my original feelings - and more! What we have here is something a bit special!

The band are Matt Larkin - guitar and vocals, Oly Edkins - bass and vocals and Adam Kelly - drums. Fresh faced but ooohh so confident ooohh so talented. This eleven tracker races along from start to finish. It's not 'punk', it's not 'indie' - it's just Rictus and that's rock 'n' roll enough for me. The songs are superbly thought out, intelligent and finely crafted. There's a matureness about their songwriting that just kicks most of their contemporaries into touch. All three can more than handle their respective instruments. Matt has a very special quality to his young voice; there's a lovely smoothness and softness that is almost a contradiction to their chosen genre. In months and years to come I'm confident that, as his voice mellows and deepens, these qualities will only get better - scarey!! Oly too has a great voice; he supports Matt impressively and when the two combine there's quality harmonies which, at this age, they shouldn't be able to achieve. Add to this his great, punchy bass work and Rictus are two thirds the way there. Wow, Then there's Adam's drumming; accurate, vibrant, controlled and rock solid - more frightening potential!

To try to pick out individual tracks for mention here would be futile and unfair. Suffice to say that there aint a bad one on offer. It's here, in the songwriting, that I'm really totally dumb struck. A sort of naive matureness, if that's not a contradiction. Strong, punchy riffs, catchy melodies and great lyrics. It's hard really to come to terms with this trio's talent and thus potential. This is a stunningly good work that'll be getting many more plays over the next few days.

Rictus have special qualities and frightening talent. Fresh faced, maybe but they're a real hard edged package to look and listen out for.

Rictus have found a potentially great formula for success with what they're doing - Now just watch them grow!!
