Play 90 second soundbite of 'The Dark Sky' @ 'CD quality'
'Approximate Hellhound' by Reid Paley Trio is almost a one-off. Reid Paley Trio take 'rock' to a new place; their music is often brash and slightly rough-cut but as entertaining as hell! With Paley's visionary take on modern music he brings something quite exciting to the table; syncopated rock with simplicity of feel - dark humour - cutting remarks - witty, poetic ramblings - all feeling like a breath of fresh air that's slowly but surely emanating from the vibrancy of New York's music scene to take on all-comers. Reid Paley and Co. are 'givin' it some' without having to copy or plagiarise. Ok, so there's a slight leaning towards the Waits' way of doing things, but Paley isn't trying to take on Waits, how could he? Why should he?!! Why would he?!
'Approximate Hellhound' has that unnerving quality that make it sound familiar and safe whilst clearly pushing at the 'envelope' of musical perception and taking risks whilst swimming against the flow. Paley himself has that unique ability to sound like a smoke-throated, booze drenched, urban poet with a seemingly natural penchant for the obtuse, the oblique and charmingly, if off-beat, accessibility. Methinks that Reid Paley Trio are gonna grind out a very rewarding niche for themselves - they may never actually become household names but they'll certainly pick up a massive following of like-minded musically challenged experimentalists and suitably affected devotees of the weird and wonderful.
Reid Paley Trio seem to be able to undermine musical convention and come up smelling all sweet and pure; their music is wondrously intriguing, as compelling as hell and refreshingly original. These guys make discordant acceptable - they aint goin' down no well trodden route - they're opening up new highways through just doin' it their own way. And, my God it works!
The album's rather short for my liking with ten great tracks running out at just over thirty minutes. But what a fantastic introduction to a band that's surely got a massive future in the industry. 'Approximate Hellhound' by Reid Paley Trio is an outstanding piece of work that sticks two fingers up at rock convention and opens up a whole new world of contemporary music. Inspired and truly excellent!! Love it!!
