Pyramid Quartet

@ The Plumbers Arms, Worcester - 28/9/01

Chris  Ben  Jon  Alec

This four piece outfit play original, contemporary jazz with a difference; they don't drag their tunes out with overlong solos - they keep the pieces down to about five or six minutes and that way are able to keep the listeners' attention. So often this type of jazz loses the listener as the soloists can become extremely introverted with their music - but so far, not Pyramid Quartet.

Relatively new on the scene and still building their set, these guys are pretty good. Most of the solos come from the reeds of Chris Barber who manages some pretty hairy runs without ever becoming too freaky.

Pyramid Quartet

The rhythm section of drummer Jon Parkes and bassist Alec Wood, keep the whole thing moving along nicely as they work together, seemingly with ease. Keyboard man and occasional percussionist, Ben Craig, works solidly throughout weaving complex patterns around Chris' blowing. They don't linger too long between numbers either and with numerous, mid-number, tempo changes they certainly keep it interesting.

The set included 'Ridin' The Devil Out', 'Biscuit', 'Predator' and 'Lounger', all works from their recent demo CD. They ended with something they referred to as 'Monkey', to which they added some (yes, you guessed it, ape) vocal effects (Mmmmm, interesting!).
