Pipers

Demo/Promo - 1/2 Penny Marvel

Play 90 second soundbite of 'Have A Smile' @ 'CD quality'

This demo was entered into the 2007 Toxic Pete / ffg Studios Demo Competition

Pipers are an Italian outfit based in Naples and they make no excuses for their penchant for things Lennon-esque and British retro. That's cool because what they are doing is superb.

After a tricky start with a badly burned CD I finally got to hear all of the tracks on this excellent promo CD, '1/2 Penny Marvel'. Pipers (Stefano, Darko, Jube & Lucio) do the softer, melodic side of modern 'pop' music - Yes, often very much in the style of the late John Lennon but with a very contemporary twist. Their other influences are also allowed to shape their overall sound and Pipers manage to pull it off with consummate ease.

Although the track listing shows just three tracks on the CD, there are actually four in total; 'Tonight Goodbye', 'Catch Me!', 'Have A Smile' and as a sort of bonus thing there's also 'Just To Try'. The CD starts off with a beautifully lilting piece that seems to be a sort of mid-point groover around which Pipers either take it up with 'Catch Me!' or down with 'Just to Try'. It's quite a mix but it works because it clearly shows what these guys can do.

Pipers can certainly write great songs and they definitely understand how to craft a quality piece of work. Instrumentally and vocally there's nothing to fault; everything's well performed and actually, for a self-produced work, very impressively recorded (it's just a shame that the end product here has suffered through a minor computer glitch).

Pipers may be Italian but they actually sound quite British. Their obvious love of 'Brit pop' has stood them in good stead and there's absolutely no reason why Pipers couldn't become a major player in the UK.

Pipers have impressed me and '1/2 Penny Marvel' is an extremely worthy piece of promotional material that could easily see Pipers getting work over here in the UK.
