Play 90 second soundbite of 'Wilderness' @ 'CD quality'
'Filmtales' is a dreamy work of vocal and instrumental tracks that feature brilliant string arrangements, haunting vocals and scintillating rhythms. A work of absolute class, 'Filmtales' is the sort of music you want play when you need to create a sensuous and relaxed atmosphere; this is a work of mood and sensation that slides effortlessly down into your soul and leaves you fulfilled and optimistic. It's music that doesn't have to be pondered over too much - just let it happen and take it as it comes in all its sincerity and splendour.
Unlike so many other 'mood' albums Paul Leonard Morgan's 'Filmtales' doesn't rely totally on today's digital wizardry to create the 'sound'; Morgan, of course, uses electronica within his soundscapes but he mixes the modern with the traditional by incorporating real strings, 'featured' voices and 'tangible' instruments - the end result is breathtaking and at times astonishing. His 'songs' too range from modern-esque to the more traditional John Barry-esque but all with a contemporary slant; nothing here sounds at all old-hat which can often be the case with musical 'scores' and similar themes but, Morgan keeps it all very current, very 'now'. Sure, any one of these eleven tracks would work well as a stand-alone multi-media score but amazingly they all come together on 'Filmtales' to form an absorbing and tantalising 'suite' of tracks that sit very well together and gel pretty seamlessly.
What a change it is to encounter an album such as 'Filmtales' by Paul Leonard Morgan; a rich and fertile collection of pseudo-classical works with a distinctly modern edge - Morgan's music shouldn't be age-challenged - it could and should appeal to all ages and all walks of life - after all, this is 'proper' music isn't it?
