Play 90 second soundbite of 'A Terrible Thing' @ 'CD quality'
No Machine have a commercial way about them; certainly their songs err on the side of instant impact although their compositions are definitely No Machine unique and a degree 'deeper' than most pure pop works.. No Machine seem to be looking towards originality through innovation and to a point they make it work; the five songs here are absorbing and appealing. No Machine's music, although hooky, does take a few listens to really get into - yes they have impact but the true depth of writing and performance only really become obvious with time and multiple plays.
'No Machine EP' is crisp and precise and indicates that these guys, led by the Rivers brothers, mean business. Theirs is a way that unites well crafted songs with instrumental and studio precision. Without doubt, No Machine have been guided and honed by experienced 'back room boys' and that guidance is paying off through the quality of the finished product.
'No Machine EP' is superbly handled. At times No Machine remind me a little of early Marillion; the vocal energy is somewhat akin to what Fish used to manage and the songs build beautifully to provide a massive backdrop for the voice to work within. Although No Machine are great at what they do I'm not actually too sure whether their style of pop/rock is going to work in the here and now; No Machine have a distinct prog rock feel to them and that might just prove to be inappropriate in the current pop climate. Impressive stuff though!!
