Yes, they do a couple of covers - Tom Waites' 'Diamonds On My Windshield' (try that without the aid of safety nets) for one, but generally they are an original act. And, act is an apt description because 24 year old and baby faced Luke in particular has a frighteningly natural talent to entertain. Apart from his brilliant and wide ranging vocals, he plays great guitar, writes outstandingly original songs and generally entertains his audience with consummate ease.
Tired and straight from tiring gigs in Holland and London, tonight, Nizlopi had The Marr's Bar audience in their hands, captivated and fascinated. It was the first time that I'd ever seen the entire (and I mean everyone!) audience up and dancing (and this was an acoustic night!!).
As they started, Luke took himself off into the audience, guitar in hand, and sang unamplified as John sat (after a very recent back injury) and provided the bass accompaniment. Just how John keeps up with Luke's seemingly spontaneous behaviour I don't really know - but he does!
Amongst many finely crafted and beautifully presented songs 'Fine Story' and 'JCB' stood out for me, the latter with mucho audience participation (imagine trying to drive a big yellow digger!!). Loads of ad-lib, spontaneous stuff was thrown in to keep excellent bassman John on his toes including an on-the-spot song made up from audience suggestion (musical genre, key words, that sort of thing) - it has to be said that this didn't work too well tonight but I've seen them do it before to great effect.
A few extra numbers were performed during the encore before Nizlopi invited everyone to meet them and get to know them. Immediately following this gig they were off to record their first 'proper' CD - personally, I can't wait to get a copy - should be stunning!!
