Nizlopi

CD - 'The Demo!'

Play 90 second soundbite of 'Fine Story' @ 'CD quality'

Wow! You must know that feeling - that certain gut thing that you get when you experience something out of the ordinary, something special. Well, that's the feeling I'm getting right now as I write this. The reason for that feeling is that I'm writing as I listen to an exceptionally good demo CD. It's 'The Demo!' by the superbly talented duo that goes by the name of Nizlopi. And, if this is just a home grown demo then I can't wait to hear what they eventually put out as their true debut work. This is quality!!

Nizlopi is Luke Concannon (guitar, vocals, anything that makes an acceptable noise and can be put together with words!) and John Parker (double bass). Here they have laid down eight great and original tracks that get into your head straight from the opening refrain, 'Well well well well, fine story to tell...' of 'Fine Story' and continue to bury themselves deep into the great songs area of the grey matter right through to the closing bars of track eight, 'Wash Away'. But it doesn't wash away, it doesn't go away, it begs to stay, it wants to be firmly imbedded in the memory banks.

The CD player's now on Repeat - six, or is it seven, times now it's looped through all eight songs. I'm not even slightly bored with this. Each new listen uncovers something else that I somehow missed last time. It's like watching a great movie over and over where you keep seeing something that you somehow didn't see before. It's fresh each time. Genius!!

They're the sort of songs that you find yourself whistling or singing as you go about your business. Perhaps at first you can't remember where you heard them but you just keep on repeating the tune or the words. Nizlopi write those sort of songs - the ones that one day will make a big impact, the ones that will make Nizlopi a big and well known name. 'Long Distance Love', 'Faith'. 'JCB', 'Freedom' and 'Hangover' complete the line up of clever, catchy songs. Every track is of the highest quality - every one honed to perfection. There's not one even slightly weak song.

Luke's voice has that rare, boy next door quality, that certain likeable naivety. His style is like nobody else's - it's just Luke Concannon! John's bass work is like a masterclass of precision - whether picked, plucked or bowed it's pure class. Overall, the production is excellent considering this is just a demo and there's some great keyboard work and subtle drumming (credits given are Josh Clark for drums on 'JCB', Matt Close drums and Tom Bailey keyboards on 'Freedom' and 'Hangover') thrown in for good measure.

Oh, hang on a minute I've just found an error - the track listing has tracks seven and eight reversed. There we go, I knew there must be something to fault!!
