Newton Faulkner

@ Wulfren Hall, Wolverhampton, 12/9/06

Newton Faulkner, I sadly admit, was a name unknown to me until tonight. Supporting Nizlopi, Faulkner opened the show with a short but highly impressive set of acoustic virtuosity and natural talent.

Instantly connecting with and getting into the hearts of his audience Faulkner quickly got down to the serious business of 'selling' himself through his on-stage musical magic. He joked and bantered between songs and when it came to the crunch he performed with grit and positivity. Certainly, Faulkner grabbed my attention from the moment he walked on stage; with impressive 'dreads' and relaxed but warm attitude he played his socks off and sang his heart out. And, what a voice this guy's got! With his massive guitar dexterity and originality of style Faulkner totally blew me away. Vocally, this guy has all the silky warmth of a young Stephen Stills and the power and extrovert prowess of an ebullient Nick Harper. His guitar style is amazing to watch; long left-hand finger stretches reaching for strange but effective chord shapes - right hand doubling (or should that be trebling?) as picker, strummer and percussion section. Impressive, almost awe inspiring stuff!

Unfortunately, in his supporting role it was over all to quickly. Receiving a warm and appreciative ovation Newton Faulkner obviously had the same effect on most of the musos in attendance tonight - quite right too - Newton Faulkner has something special goin' on!

If hard hitting but sensitive acoustic musical eloquence is in your remit then Newton Faulkner is one to watch out for.
