Nell Bryden's pretty unique style calls on early jazz, country, folk and blues influences and results in a pleasantly refreshing, brightly dynamic sound that would sit comfortably within each genre without looking at all out of place in any one. Bryden's music is almost eclectic in form; she refuses to sit for long in any individual camp, rather preferring to mix it up, maintain originality, impart fluidity and keep it alive. Bryden can sing with frivolous glee and do the whole 'pop' thing but she can also emote beautifully and really tell it like it is, the stunning blues tinged 'From Midnight On' being a prime example of the latter. It doesn't seem to matter what mood she's required to visit, Nell Bryden does it all with consummate ease and total believability. Bryden seems to live the emotion of every song here and truly sings from the heart and, her ability to make pull you into the song, to feel it, to experience it, is really amazing. Certainly, I enjoyed every second of my time with Nell Bryden and this superb album and I'll be revisiting and joining her again quite a few times yet I'm sure!
Bryden flits between genre with consummate ease, nothing seems to stand in her way, she has style, she has passion and she has class and then she has - that voice!! Visiting the album, 'Second Time Around', is like taking a trip through a family run 'record' store where everything's available within reason; turn the corner and you'll be in amongst jazz, walk on into country, turn left into folk, right into bluegrass, straight on to folk, as so it goes on. Only the finest works are available in this charming musical retail outlet, only the best coz they can't afford to waste space with second rate or 'old-hat'. Nell Bryden's wide-ranging musical world is a replica of that store - only the best of anything, everything in its place, all up to the 'mark'.
'Second Time Around', the album, by Nell Bryden is an absolutely stunning collection of music from across the ages and through the styles - beautifully executed, amazingly crafted and totally compelling, a must have album of the highest order for anyone with a discerning ear. Genre-hopping Nell Bryden has assembled a real gem of a work here - the single and the EP both hinted at the possible potential but, this album demonstrates quite clearly the depth and strength of Nell Bryden's abilities - the all-round, all-encompassing qualities, the epitome of style, quality personified. 'Second Time Around' by Nell Bryden is the proverbial 'mutt's nuts'. Superb!!!
