Play 90 second soundbite of 'Good Times' @ 'CD quality'
'Good Times' has a real down-home honest feel to it; uncluttered but precise, relaxed yet invigorating, 'Good Times' is beautifully understated but superbly executed. Naughty Jack's effortless style makes it all sound so easy and his sweet yet gravely voice has a certain charm and likeable quality. Naughty Jack combines all the poetic thrust of early Dylan with the sweeter qualities of Donovan and the ballsy conviction of Rod Stewart but is quite unlike any of them; Naughty Jack is one on his own and his lo-blues delivery is sensitive and hearty. I suppose Naughty Jack's musical way is like a crossroads where blues and folk meet, gently collide and emerge with fresh optimism, new focus and irresistible charisma.
Naughty Jack is more country blues than delta, more poetic nu-folk than trad arr. His subtle but artistic use of dobro creates just the right amount of instrumental emotion as well as generating that near country 'twang'! Lyrically well-grounded and mature and instrumentally precise and punctuative, Naughty Jacks' music is sweet and near blissful. His boy-next-door approach works extremely well as he injects just the right degree of believability into his superbly structured songs. I could listen to this guy all night and never tire of what he's givin' out!!
'Good Times' by Naughty Jack is a refreshingly cool but nicely mournful work. A real pleasure to partake of and a very nice change from much of the 'harder' edged similarly targeted stuff out there. Sensitive and unpretentious, Naughty Jack proves that you don't have to be brash and flash to make music work for you (even in the blues world!) - an all-round excellent album from a stylish and exciting artist that I crave to hear a lot more of. Simplistically beautiful, honestly gritty, silkily workmanlike, 'Good Times' by Naughty Jack is a thing of absolute pleasure to just sit and enjoy - superb!!
