Play 90 second soundbite of 'London Town' @ 'CD quality'
Although the promo material tells me this is the EP, 'Tales Of The Town', I have just two tracks to go at; 'London Town' and 'Melancholy Lullaby'. Both seem to sum up what we Brits are so good at when it comes to cheeky but poignant lyrics and grittily sympathetic music heralding the 'joys' of our fair land. Given what I've got here I'm not sure whether just the two tracks make up the EP or if this is just a tantalising taster for more. Whatever the answer, I like what I hear. Ok, so we've heard similar things before but National Heroes are hard to discount and put down. They manage to sound 'now' rather than 'then' and there's definitely something likeable and worthy in what they do.
National Heroes, as their name suggests, aim their work at the heart of British culture and it's joys and pit-falls. Maybe is old ground dug up and turned over but the resultant 'earth-works' is fertile rather than landfill. There'll always be a place in our musical world and heritage for bands such as National Heroes - good, workmanlike stuff.
