My Friend Juliet

Debut EP

Play 90 second soundbite of 'This Broken Empire' @ 'CD quality'

My Friend Juliet are a four piece alt-rock outfit from North Yorkshire. Following a deal of success in their locale they've now started making heads turn further afield. This five tracker gives a pretty good indication of just why My Friend Juliet are making quick ground.

Their style manages to combine nicely melodic with powerhouse rock; the EP kicks of feeling quite gentle with the short but stylish 'Lights & Darks Of Any Given Soul'. It gently eases the listener in to punchy opening of 'This Broken Empire' which has a Nickelback meets the gentler side of Devin Townsend feel to it - it's an impressively moulded work all round as it writhes its way through its carefully structured changes and tempo's, great vocals and occasional metalesque screams. 'Factor 45' hits mid-ground with its hypnotic, repetitive rhythms opening things up heavier, punchy choruses. 'Collision Theory' finds the band generally more pacey with quite a commercial feel. Again well crafted and superbly performed this shows the depth and variation in My Friend Juliet's repertoire. 'I Don't Believe In Fairies' combines all that's gone before with pacey riffs and rhythms interwoven with slower melodies and subtle instrumentation. So, although only just under eighteen minutes in total, this debut EP sets things up nicely. Short, yes - but a great taster - a truly impressive starter for what, I'm sure, will lead to a very appetising main course before long. I hope the wait's not too long - I'm already hungry for more!!

Over too soon, I like what I'm hearing. The whole thing is well worked, cleverly structured and very professionally handled. It's on repeat play as I write 'cause it's that moreish. It's also easy to see why these four guys are creating waves further afield. They've got all the tools nicely in place; they're tight, instrumentally totally competent, vocally excellent and their songwriting's impressive and pretty damn cool. And, My Friend Juliet, as well as coming up with a great name, have managed to put together a terrific showcase release that's sure to generate even more interest. Nice work boys!
