Play 90 second soundbite of 'Silverplated' @ 'CD quality'
'Silverplated' is strangely strange but oddly normal; Music Roll Exchange definitely test the aural senses with this single - one moment it sounds like something from the 60's, the next it's right on the 'time' button. I actually find 'Silverplated' just a bit too unusual for an 'A' side single - I'm not too sure how this will be accepted by the general public - I can't quite put my finger on the thing that 'takes me off the scent' but there's just something goin' on that confuses the issue here. Certainly the mix is quite cluttered; there's a lot goin' on instrumentally and vocally and perhaps Music Roll Exchange have let the studio get to them just a bit and have tried to be a bit too clever rather than just letting it all happen! However, that said, I do like the overall sound of Music Roll Exchange - they use retro 'jangly' guitars and really tasty vocal harmonies very well and that gives them an edge that many outfits will struggle to better.
'Broken Sea' accompanies this single; great track!! This is beautifully handled from start to finish and there's a great maturity about the whole track. I'd rather have put this as the 'A' side coz it's got more instant appeal about it, it's easier to get into and it'll work very well as a radio play. Music Roll Exchange have certainly got what it takes to make an impression; they're doing something a bit different but very likeable and they show here that they can write with educated grit and play with enthusiastic passion.
'Silverplated' by Music Roll Exchange is a tidy little single that should help get the name of the band out to more distant places. The band show great potential here but I can't help but feel that Music Roll Exchange are gonna end up being an albums band rather than a singles band.
