Murkin

The Halloween Party EP

Play 90 second soundbite of 'Halloween Party' @ 'CD quality'

Murkin seem to have a sort of modern-day protest thing going on. Murkin are here to make us think, to get us away from the mundane, help stop the banal pop song attitude. Murkin are 'anti-pop'. Murkin are also pretty accomplished as writers and musicians judging from this four track EP. 'Halloween Party' attempts to redress the wrongs that Murkin believe are being done to popular music. Murkin are attempting to put some heart and meaning back into this mass media by writing and playing songs with lyrics that have messages - as songwriting traditionally tended to be.

With 'The Halloween Party EP' the five Murkins lay down tight, rockin' rhythms that border on a punk-pop feel. Murkin really sound a tight unit and as the four songs progress from 'Halloween Party', through 'Sometimes' and 'Freeworld' and on to 'This Time' I find myself warming to them and their work.

They're not actually as aggressive and in-yer-face as their promo material suggests - in fact I think they're just real nice pussy-cats that are genuinely trying to make good music. Yes, I'm sure they've got a message to get across but they're obviously more than capable of competing with all-comers; their strong songs, well thought out lyrics and great musical abilities will shine through - with or without that message!!

If Murkin want to 'rattle cages and make you think', I don't really care. All I know is that this EP release clearly shows that Murkin, first and foremost, are a great rockin' band that can make a difference simply by their musical aptitudes and abilities. Murkin (the pussy-cats that they are) have 'cut' a seriously good EP with 'Halloween Party' - I hope that they continue to write and play this well without letting too much 'pop politics' blur their vision.
