Mr.Bennett

@ The Marr's Bar, Worcester - 20/3/05

Originally from Toronto Mr.Bennett made a few new friends in Worcester tonight as he opening the evening's entertainment of four, yes Worcester folk, four Canadian artists. Playing a stripped down set of his original songs with just acoustic guitar and his own silky voice Mr.Bennett simply sauntered through his repertoire, hooked us and reeled us in. (And, judging from the reaction of the female portion of the audience, I'm sure he could have taken most of that portion of his catch home on a plate!!). Such was Mr.Bennett's magnetism!!

Sounding like a cross between Lou Reed and Leonard Cohen Mr.Bennett held the small audience with words and voice. His style and intonation was very reminiscent of Reed but his voice had a timbre somewhat in the Cohen mould - put those together and it can't be bad!! His songs were fascinating works full of clever contradictions and lyrical juxtaposition. Although totally guitar competent, it was the voice that first struck home and once drawn in the listener then came to realise the beauty of the lyrics and melodies. With his extremely laid back approach Mr.Bennett effortlessly plied his trade and held his attentive audience captive during his entire set.

If big bucks weren't available from his share of the door money I'm sure it was made up for to some degree by CD sales - and rightly so!!
