Moya's voice and style are so well known that I guess you already think you know what's coming. But wait, 'No One Talks' finds Moya in much more contemporary mood than we're used to! Yes, she's still instantly recognisable simply from her gentle and precise approach and I'm sure that's something that will stay with her no matter what she does. 'No One Talks' is a subtle move just far away enough from the 'traditional' Clannad; it's less 'Irish' sounding for a start. At times, and I think it's in the lyrics, it feels a little like Kate Bush in lullaby mode. There's no doubt that Moya still retains the gentle, lilting style she's made her own but here she just reaches out a little further towards the popular market. Beautifully and sympathetically orchestrated, 'No One Talks' meets all the outrageously high standards you'd expect from someone with such a fine musical pedigree; hints of Ireland still remain through subtle additional instrumentation but the overall feel is more one of global green rather than just pure 'emerald'. Lyrically this piece has a emotionally honest content but without ever sounding self indulgent - more heartfelt and tangible than pitying.
The slight sideways movement away from signature Clannad to classically tinted 'world folk' works well and 'No One Talks' will do well for Moya Brennan; her massive following will find her comfortably recognisable without being too different and she should reach out to previous disbelievers through her musical integrity and purity.
