Mouse

@ The Marr's Bar - 13/10/02

Mouse, perhaps the name gives away the feel - a quiet acoustic act comprising Martha Tilston (any relation to Steve Tilston?) and Nick Marshall. Tonight, ably supported by the luscious supporting vocals of Hannah Yelland, Mouse tiptoed their way through an atmospheric set of folksy songs.

Maddy Prior, Janis Ian and Joni Mitchell eat your hearts out - this was, this is Martha Tilston. A voice to die for. Timbre and quality that'd be hard to better, anywhere and on any stage. Controlled vibrato and microphone technique that showed top drawer professionalism. Quality songs that anyone could relate to - we've all been there, we've all felt and done what we heard tonight!!

Oh, and then there's the guitar and backing vocals of Nick - finger picking excellence, superb harmonics, control that belies his seemingly youthful years. All that and a subtle, deeply melodic voice - what more could anyone ask for??

This was one of the quietest nights I've experienced on Marr's. It was also one of the best!! Original, acoustic folk music without being too finger in the ear stuff mixed with some brilliantly portrayed Trad Arr stuff with just a couple of latter day covers thrown in. Audience participation in abundance, emotional songs, great intro's, good hearted banter and a light and friendly ambience, all for just four quid. What more could anyone ask for?

Mouse opened with the beautiful 'Helicopter Trees' followed by 'Snow' before bringing Hannah into the frame to back them on 'Bring Him Home'. A positive wealth of emotionally charged and meaningful numbers such as 'Tiniest Kiss' and 'Night Rambling' followed (as per their set list) before the chilled feeling in the club overtook them and they wandered off into Trad Arr territory. A beautiful version of 'Silver Dagger' changed the feel entirely and then the set seemed to go into a loosely unrehearsed feel as they seemed to choose songs for that evening in particular. They appeared to enjoy the respect they received from the small audience and responded with a great set.

All night Mouse went about their business with a respectful and friendly professionalism. They deserved a bigger audience - perhaps next time!!

But, once again, where were you Worcester music lovers? Take heed of Marzy's scribblings when they arrive on your doorstep or in your new messages/email ramblings. Marzy knows what he's talking about you know!! Listen and read, get your arses off that nice comfortable chair and visit the Sunday acoustic nights.
