The Crying Girl EP

Ok, lets get the Seamus Cullen thing outta the way first! Cullen was one of the entrants into BBC's 'Any Dream Will Do' to find a new Joseph for Andrew Lloyd-Weber's famous musical, 'Joseph And His blah, blah, blah' . Yes, he was good but, apparently, not good enough! Anyway, Cullen is but one fifth of Mosquito who are releasing this EP, 'The Crying Girl', ahead of their forthcoming album.

What Mosquito do, they do extremely well; these guys have been around the block a time or two and it shows in their whole audio presence! Three tracks, 'Annual Leave', 'The Crying Girl' and 'Heal Me' tell much about this impressive band. They're not actually pure indie and they don't come at ya with gut-tuggin' rock either. What Mosquito do is mature, melodic rock that often borders on nu-prog; anthemic sounding but on the subtle side of the genre. Their songs are story-telling epics that feature grand arrangements and wonderfully controlled musicianship. Sure, Cullen does a magnificent job vocally - but, Mosquito (they've been around for about five years, by the way) are very much a band that excels on the unity score. These guys work solidly and slickly for each other to enable Mosquito to deliver their finely honed songs with air-tight precision and systematic drive.

'The Crying Girl' EP speaks volumes about Mosquito, (more than the paparazzi ever will about one of the members). Mosquito simply let their music do the talking! Forget what you read about events that took place for television, Mosquito (yes ok, and Seamus Cullen) go about their business with professionalism and dedication to the task in hand - that being to pen great songs, make quality recordings and move forward and hopefully upward. And anyway, I'd think that the other band members, Steve Bass, Simon Greenslade, Chris Lawes and Ed Stern are grateful that Cullen 'failed' - he'd be quite difficult to replace!

For me, Mosquito have a slightly retro feel - they're not exactly covering new ground here, rather re-visiting well tried and tested musical formulae and injecting fresh energy and vibrancy into the form through quality musicianship and attention to detail. And, Mosquito hit the spot pretty damn well - I really like 'The Crying Girl' EP and I look forward, with some relish, to hearing their album.
