Play 90 second soundbite of 'Beautiful & Fitting' @ 'CD quality'
Experimentally exquisite 'Uncertain Weather' lays down its no-rules philosophy with almost gay abandon. 'Uncertain Weather' goes to places most bands wouldn't dare think about let alone make their trademark! Perhaps New Order got somewhere close to doing what Moonshot seem to have now made their own but apart from that, there aint much out there now that even approaches Moonshot's brave take on modern electronic music.
Elements of just about everything slip in and out of this excellent album. The album's title of 'Uncertain Weather' almost looks like a typographical error once you've listened to it - should this really be titled 'Uncertain Whether' - wouldn't that be more appropriate? This work doesn't profess to be anything other than experimental brilliance. It works superbly. It's almost bafflingly relaxing and certainly refreshing - hence my choice of mp3 sample, 'Beautiful & Fitting'!
When you listen to Moonshot it's hard to fathom than they're just a three-piece unit (calling on vocal support here and there from Debs, Gaby and Claire); Richard Wolfe (keyboards, programming, lead & backing vocals), Daniel Kent (guitars, programming, lead & backing vocals) and Jeremy Grant (keyboards, programming, lead & backing vocals) and you don't need to be a genius to realise that Moonshot are very much an electronically biased outfit. You may think that because of the heavy influence of 'programming' in Moonshot's work, that they are not worthy of such big, bold statements about their work. Not true. Moonshot deserve every bit of praise for utilising such instruments within the framework of their extremely clever songwriting. Moonshot don't just make electronic 'noise' - they really do compose superb and intriguing songs.
I was impressed by their last album 'Fear Today, Gone Tomorrow'. I'm now even more convinced of Moonshot's innovative genius! None of these guys has the strongest voice on the planet but I just love their approach; the simple, nursery rhyme feel, the empathetic vocal intonation that lends itself oh so well to their somewhat futuristic musical works of earthy atmosphere and sleepy imagining.
For me, Moonshot tick all the right boxes; they're innovators, musically sound, creatively bold, fresh and right up my musical road. 'Uncertain Weather' from Moonshot is not just good - its magnificent!
