Mood Indigo

2005 Demo

Play 90 second soundbite of 'Don't Know Why' @ 'CD quality'

This demo was entered into the 2006 Toxic Pete / ffg Studios Demo Competition

Mood Indigo go out as a duo of piano and vocal or as a four piece band with double bass and drums. This demo features the duo of Nathan Rose (piano) and Rebecca Downes (vocals) and covers two swing classics and one contemporary jazz piece.

Now then, as a demo aimed at the smoochy jazz club, a chill out lounge or posh restaurant this will work well. However, it's really only going to hit the mark in those areas; it's cool and well done but a little specialist. Perhaps their name gives them away too!

As a duo Mood Indigo, although polished, lack that important dynamic. I'm sure that the inclusion of bass and drums would help there. Rose's piano work is very laid back and sits well with Downes' chilled vocal approach. For me though, it's all just too laid back and predictable, staid even - I'd like to hear a bit more improvisation from both performers to left things and give it all a brighter feel.

Mood indigo have chosen three pretty 'safe' songs here too; Norah Jones' 'Don't Know Why', Sinatra's 'Girl From Ipanema' and Ella Fitzgerald's 'Every Time We Say Goodbye' - all well known, all suitable for improvisation. The versions here are all a bit sleepy sounding. As musicians I can't fault Mood Indigo but as performers, based on this demo, I'd have to say that I am disappointed.

With swing being pretty pc at the moment, Mood Indigo will get work through this demo. If they really pushed the boat out and took this genre by the scruff of the neck and shook it about Mood Indigo could start to make a difference. I reiterate, the name tells the tale - Mood Indigo, blue mood! Perhaps they should aim for brighter colours elsewhere in the rainbow.
