Play 90 second soundbite of 'Breathe (Radio Edit)' @ 'CD quality'
I have to say that 'Breathe' is just different enough to grab the attention and certainly begs the question 'Have we pushed this far enough?' Well, Missileer are definitely having a go at making that difference. 'Breathe' does sound fresh; I just wonder whether they set their bale-out point just a little too low. What Missileer are doing sounds commercial enough and I can see it working really well on the dance scene. But, I think maybe they should be stretching further to really push at the boundaries.
So, 'Breathe' is pretty damn cool - it has plenty of heart and guts and is very moreish. Jo's voice is set nicely into the mix as the 'strings' and guitars swirl and the rhythm section pulsates around her. Her vocal dynamics are great and the lyrics are crystal clear which allows the listener to really get into the song. 'Breathe (Radio Edit)' repeats the process and does exactly what it says. Bonus track, 'The Information', is probably less commercial but sounds like it could carry anthem like qualities with its repetitive chorus and funky vibe.
Missileer are at trying to remove themselves from the R&B stockpile by opening up new avenues through their innovative use of heady instrumentation - I like their attitude and hope they persevere and continue to push the containment ropes further afield.
