Exhilarating!! That's just about the most apt word I can come up with for this mighty album. 'The Great Northern Whalekill' puts rock music squarely back in its rightful place - it's a stunning, if at times torturous, rock'n'roll outing to waken the senses and tingle the nerve endings. Massive riffs vie with scintillating rhythms without crowding out the impressive and expansive vocals - adrenalin fuelled individual performances meld into a well crafted unity to become an awesome, solid rock'n'roll monster of a sound - the massively impressive performances are further bolstered by a strength of writing that's as good as anything out there. Minus could just be the new rock phenomenon that the music industry badly needs and 'The Great Northern Whalekill' could prove to be the electrifying catalyst that starts the whole reaction off - it's massive - it's monstrous - it's magnificent!!
Minus have captured a musical 'moment' here; they certainly don't bow down to old-school rock convention and they definitely don't kow-tow to modernistic metal rock mayhem - Minus get the balance just right and straddle the entire rock idiom, with all its myriad nuances, with their supremely structured, maturely written rock anthems for the future. 'The Great Northern Whalekill' is an exceptional piece of work and deserves global exposure and then, hopefully, universal success!!
Rock bands come and rock bands go. Rock music has been re-invented, re-defined and re-structured time and time again. Rock will live on in one form or another and I can see Minus being one of the driving forces behind wherever rock will go or whatever rock will become - 'The Great Northern Whalekill' by Minus is glorious in every way - a great chunk of majestic rock'n'roll heaven and maybe the start of a glorious new age for the genre. Whatever, one thing's for sure - the future of rock music is safe in the hands of Iceland's Minus!
