Play 90 second soundbite of 'Lullaby Trial' @ 'CD quality'
Although still a bit of an enigma to me, I now appreciate Meg for just being Meg. On first hearing my initial reaction was that they were probably underselling themselves, but, after repeated playings I now think I get the bigger picture. Their understated low-fi approach is exactly that - understated and low-fi. Meg make simple music in a very simplistic way; their seems to be no bullshit 'look at us, we're great', they just seem to get on and do their own thing in their own way.
Track one, 'A song for' absolutely typifies Meg's unusual style. Slightly uneasy, wavering vocals atop of solid, punchy rhythms, good lyrics and with a bit of a hook - it's just so simple really! My personal favourite on offer here is track two, 'Lullaby Trial'. This is actually a great song. Beautifully assembled and so laid back it's a little gem although the closing bars did leave me a little cold. 'Jet Set Willy' has a real retro feel to it but I think it's the weakest track of the three. I'm sure that Meg have great fun playing this but I find it a bit too twee and possibly a little introverted, it's not for me but it did make me appreciate the earlier tracks even more.
'A Song For' hasn't converted me to be a Meg lover, but it has helped me to understand what they're doing. I think the clever part of Meg's music is the fact that it has a 'no shit' attitude. They seem to have picked up on a style that is unique to them and that's where it works. Oh, and then there's the artwork - superb and somehow so apt.
