Maupa make an enthralling sound as the blast out their tasty and enchanting wares - unpredictable, fluid, organic - and more...'Run-Run-Sleep' is constantly in a state of musical flux, it leaves you unsure of what's coming next, it warms, it charms, it excites and it gets inside of you and messes with your mind (in the nicest possible way)!!
To say that Maupa have a unique sound is almost an understatement; Maupa actually remind me a little of Mercury Rev; the same sort of unnameable, untameable, theatrical rock stylee that never bows down to 'normality' but always sounds fresh and different. And, just like the aforementioned, Maupa demonstrate unique songwriting, great musicianship and sensational and distinctive vocals.
So, 'Run-Run-Sleep', what can I say? Sure it's different and sure it's exciting. But, more than that, 'Run-Run-Sleep' is rich in sound, drippin' with big musical statements, bulgin' with impressive arrangements that show off Maupa's exotic sounding songs quite beautifully. 'Run-Run-Sleep' is as individual as you and I, full of modern melody, masses of light and shade, songs that build from small beginnings and expand with vibrant aural 'collages' and magnificent crescendos - a big sound, a marvellous sound!!
Maupa show that originality is still key and they've definitely come up trumps with 'Run-Run-Sleep'; this is one mighty fine album!! Maupa's music is unpredictable and benefits from the diversity that the guys throw carefully into the mix. Maupa are a six-piece outfit which enables them to deliver their full-bodied sound without fuss or complication. Sure there's often (well always actually!) a lot going on but Maupa lay it all down with impressive clarity and believability. Maupa have a really good handle on dynamics (whether 'clean' or distorted) and don't fall into the trap of over-blowin' the mix - there's already plenty to take in and Maupa keep it very real and reproducible where others might over-embellish and therefore over-complicate. Maupa nail it beautifully!!
'Run-Run-Sleep' by Maupa is an extremely exciting release; fantastic songs delivered with massive control and sensitivity - the guys can sure rock but, the guys can also give it cool! 'Run-Run-Sleep' by Maupa is one of those albums that just begs to be replayed in case you missed something - the trouble is, the same can be said after the replay - did I just miss something, did I really hear that, what's goin' on?? So, there's no debate, no doubt that you just have to press 'play' again... and again...!! Brilliant album, fantastic band!! 'Run-Run-Sleep' by Maupa is right up there with the big-uns, waiting to be discovered, waiting to make its mark - and it will - this is bloody great stuff!!
