Marie Tueje

Demo - In The Back Room

Play 90 second soundbite of 'Killer In The Road' @ 'CD quality'

Marie Tueje's press pack tells of a young lady that's taken time to hone her whole musical ethos. Tueje now feels she's pretty much got it sorted and hence is releasing a six track work entitled 'In The Back Room'. This demo features just one third of that work with 'Killer In The Road' and 'Laugh Out Loud', plus an additional track in 'Boy Seeking Girl' and I have to say that Tueje's nicely whetted my appetite here.

Tueje's style is extremely hard to pigeonhole; acoustically biased and sounding quite urban, Tueje certainly seems to have wrought an original delivery style for her well penned songs. The tracks here are generally kept simple and uncluttered and allow the silky voice to become pretty much the main instrument. Although Marie Tueje dreamed of pop stardom I don't really see her as a true pop artist; her whole musical being is deeper and more far reaching than that - Tueje comes across more as an urban poet troubadour favouring observational and tangible lyrics rather than someone who would ever 'sell out' just to gain recognition. Anyway, Marie Tueje's music is too important to her to allow it to become pop trite, a fact which shows in her attention to detail not only with her vocal delivery but also in the way the songs are crafted and presented. Marie Tueje is not a pop singer - she's far better than that - she's 'alternative' nu-folk or something of that ilk.

Marie Tueje shows with this demo that she is indeed pretty much sorted; she defo knows how to write a good 'chune' and seems to have a damn good understanding of how her songs should be presented in terms of arrangements etc. In just three tracks it's easy to see that this girl's a very talented all-rounder and if she continues to dedicate herself to her musical cause, she has all the potential and certainly all the tools at hand to become a 'name' artist and a major 'player' in the probably less popular but more rewarding alternative field.

I very much enjoyed what I heard in just three shortish tracks; Marie Tueje has a very likeable way about her and I can only see her continuing to improve as she gains in confidence and self-belief. I still think there's work to be done but that may be simply down to coming to terms with exactly what kind of artist she really wants to be rather than anything lacking in ability, artistry or commitment. I also can't help but feel that Tueje's still holding something back at the moment - her voice is really beautiful but here she appears to be playing her subdued card - I bet she can really let go and give it some if the emotion allows. Marie Tueje could just prove to be a name to look out for - all the pointers here are very encouraging and with her obvious desire to succeed, I think Marie Tueje will one day make her musical dream come true. I really hope so - I shall be watching!
