Manchester's Magic Arm is actually one-man-band, multi-everything Marc Rigelsford. Magic Arm is one of those acts that you hear once and remember where and when you heard it!! 'Widths And Heights' by Magic Arm is as different and as memorable as you can get!!

Practically unpigeonholeable, Magic Arm takes modern music to new places; with a folkish under-current, a naive, nursery-rhyme-ish lilt and a massive chunk of pop sensibility, Magic Arm tests the senses to the extremes. Magic Arm's way is one of experimental pop, almost cult-like and yet actually pretty damn commercial he seems to stick two fingers up at pop convention as he pushes at the boundaries and ignores guidelines. Magic Arm makes pop music that feels fresh and new, worthwhile, mature, intelligent - and more!!

'Widths And Heights' is a pleasure to behold - at last some one's trying something different - think Syd Barrett meets Aqualung meets Badly Drawn Boy meets Weezer - well, Magic Arm is that complex and that diverse!! Totally radio friendly and beautifully singalonable, 'Widths And Heights' is as vibrant as it is taxing. Given decent air-play I can see 'Widths And Heights' making a huge impression and moving things on up for Magic Arm. However, Magic Arm may not be to everyone's taste, he may prove an experiment too far for some but anyone with an ounce of musical openness is surely bound to get this one!!

'Widths And Heights' and it's equally stunning 'b' side, 'Ballad Of Melody Nelson', by Magic Arm deserve massive success; Magic Arm has created a new sound and a whole new vibe that's commercially viable, great fun and charmingly challenging. Judging by the two tracks on offer here I reckon that Magic Arm could make music using anything you could throw at him, certainly he has the ability to take experimental music to the pop fraternity so I'm sure he could push the boundaries yet further and start a whole new musical ball a'rolling'. Surprising this one - surprising but bloody great - I love it!!
