Play 90 second soundbite of 'Back And Forth' @ 'CD quality'
Foy's kitschy style is annoyingly happy and her quirky, often charmingly naive-sounding delivery works well on 'Back And Forth'. Simplicity seems to be the buzz-word for Foy; she allows her voice and words to speak for her and tends to keep instrumentation to a workably minimalist level. Oh, and a word for her band here - superb!!
Foy sounds like a girl on a mission and 'Back And Forth' may be just catchy enough to get her noticed and talked about and then, hopefully, we'll all be able to access the wealth of talent that's quite obviously tied up in Lyla Foy and screaming to get out. The two 'B' sides, the silky lilting 'Silly Me' and the beautiful but pained 'Great Unknown' find Foy in a more whispery nu-folk mood not unlike K T Tunstall. And, like Tunstall, Foy allows her lyrics to take pride of place; she delivers her words with grace and slick professionalism against simple acoustic accompaniment. Is this the real Lyla Foy? Methinks it probably is!!
Judging by just the three tracks here, Lyla Foy writes great, pretty emotional songs and has a beautifully simple but heartfelt way of delivering her words against nicely chilled and sympathetic arrangements. There's nothing complicated here - everything is 'just so' and superbly radio friendly! Lyla Foy has all the tools and qualities to give the likes of Tunstall, Melua and Hart a hard run for their money. The girl's bloody good and could and should be appearing on a radio station, or better still a CD , in your own home, very soon! 'Back And Forth' by Lyla Foy could be the start of something very big for this charming, bright, young singer-songwriter - pretty much as good as it gets!!
