Luna-C

@ The Marr's Bar, Worcester - 16/8/01

So where were you Worcester live music fans? Never heard of Luna-C I suppose! Well actually neither had I until I listened to the monthly what's on at The Marr's Bar sampler CD. Eight tracks into the sixteen I was suddenly drawn to up the volume a little as the opening bars of 'Free To Breathe' grabbed my attention. This sounded more than just good - this was a band I just had to go and see.

Luna-C are a Hereford based, seven piece acid jazz/funk outfit of superb quality. Fronted by a little bundle of dynamite in the form of vocalist Mary Ragg they produced almost two hours of non-stop, jazzy vibes and nubeat groove of exceptional quality. A rock solid rhythm section of drums (Ian Russell), bass (Lyndon Izzard) and percussion (Kevin Bishop) laid down the foundations that let the free flowing keyboard work of Andy Pullen and the gentle but funky guitar work of Tim Gunner weave their way through the set. Trumpeter, Andi Liquorice, worked well with Mary - complementing, supporting and occasionally challenging the bubbly singer's exciting and sensual vocal style with tricky (triple tonguing and all that!) solos one minute and smooth, muted passages the next.

They take you on a musical extravaganza that's full of feel factor as they simply glide through numbers with Latin, hip hop and funky overtones, often simple - sometimes complex. Mary's vocal style is so cool and precise that it allows you to hear almost every word of the sometimes bizarre yet fascinating lyrics. They bopped their way superbly through most of the songs on their 'Schpookie' album; 'Sugar Bop', 'Passion', 'Walk With Intention', Wondrous Wanderings', 'Stag In The Road' and 'Free To Breathe' .... and more ....... and a couple of newies including 'Anonymity' (which is easier to type than say!!).

Mary's the obvious focal point of the band; she expresses herself brilliantly, not just vocally, but visually - constantly on the move, emphasising her lyrics through dance and facial expressions - an animated, passionate performance that leaves you wanting more...and more...and more! She's surrounded by an exceptional band of musicians, each a performer with such individuality and style that suggest that Luna-C are going to be big. Keep an eye open for them and if this is your scene get out there and experience Luna-C.
