Lucy Day

EP - A Trick Of The Light

Play 90 second soundbite of 'A Trick Of The Light' @ 'CD quality'

Lucy Day is an acoustic alt/folk artist from Belper in Derbyshire. Her EP, 'A Trick Of The Light', was recorded in a friend's bedroom and on it she is joined by a few similarly competent and committed musicians that go to make up the rather impressive Lucy Day Band.

Lucy wrote to me asking for opinions, good or bad; well, plenty of good Lucy, I'm struggling with the bad though!! Ok, firstly Lucy is quite obviously a great wordsmith; her poetic ramblings are mature, evocative and quite brilliantly metered into her subtle and intoxicating music. So, it follows that Lucy Day is also a very competent and commanding composer; simplistic maybe but that's exactly what her songs need so nowt wrong there either. Instrumentally, Lucy turns her hand to guitar, piano and percussion - all to great effect, all exactly correctly weighted to enhance the songs rather than detract from them - see, it's all pluses so far. Vocally, Lucy Day also has it all sorted; her gentle yet quite sultry voice is utilised quite splendidly; again Lucy keeps it all in perfect balance and symmetry with the songs, nothing too complicated, nothing too adventurous, nothing to fault or dislike! Her accompanying instrumentation has also been added and mixed with respect for the artistry of the songs - it's all well balanced and beautifully proportioned and Lucy's ability to add 'colour' and definition through the addition of traditional instruments such as viola, flute and accordion is inspired and sensitively executed.

All good news so far then Lucy!! 'A Trick Of The Light' is a beautiful six track EP that shows quite a good deal of variation albeit all within the gentler realms of the acoustic medium. Lucy Day has actually assembled a very impressive and very workmanlike EP here - her 'home grown' assemblage works all day long, there's nowt at all wrong here but much to admire and plenty to enjoy. Maybe 'A Trick Of The Light' could be enhanced a little by a professional producer but, there again, maybe not coz Lucy has done a really good job here. Lucy has thoughtfully and masterfully brought all of her skills together and displayed them beautifully on this very well crafted EP. She's done herself justice and should be extremely proud of her work coz she's sold herself superbly. She obviously knows what she wants and she's done just enough to exhibit the real and very homely Lucy Day.

'A Trick Of The Light' by Lucy Day is a very impressive work that hits home on first play but then continues to grow with repeat plays. It's a wonderfully honest and beautifully tangible work that suggests Lucy Day is a force to be reckoned with within the acoustic/folk genre. Lucy Day has everything she needs to move forward and 'A Trick Of The Light' will win her many friends and, if used promotionally, will bring her loads of live work in the acoustic arena. Impressive stuff indeed from Lucy Day - it's all good for me, not a negative in sight but absolutely loads of positives - extremely well done Lucy - I'd certainly like to hear more - good luck and keep music real!
