Play 90 second soundbite of 'Witches' @ 'CD quality'
'Witches' is Loz Bridge And The Box Social's debut release and suggests that this outfit are indeed destined for bigger things; there'll always be a place for quality music makers no matter what their genre of choice, and for sure there'll always be punters for work of this style and class!! 'Witches' is a five tracker EP and its been worked to perfection; musically understated but perfectly proportioned and mixed, compositionally mature, thoughtful and meaningful and with an execution that's up there with the best there is.
Loz Bridge And The Box Social is probably more accessible that much of Waits' music and definitely a little more up-beat than that of Nick Cave. Bridge and Co. get the balance and the vibe absolutely spot-on; 'Witches' is dark but never dreary, morose but never suicidal! To call 'Witches' foot tappin' syncopation would be perhaps going too far but it certainly is knee-jerkin' and more than just a touch compelling. Bridge keeps instrumentation minimal but still manages to inject simplistic catchability into the groove; essentially the whole of 'Witches' is given an open aspect yet it sounds more than amply dynamic - superbly conceived and beautifully executed, 'Witches' is a gloriously easy work to sit and chill to, just sit back and let it wash gently over you, pick up the groove and enjoy its subtle nuances and sparking originality.
'Witches' by Loz Bridge And The Box Social is simply fanbloodytastic and lays the foundations for bigger works to come. Loz Bridge is more than able to compete in this particular market-place; somewhat cultish maybe but still viable commercially and there's every chance that Loz Bridge And The Box Social will rise up to be a massive force to be reckoned with. Great British music, classy, evocative and wonderfully moody - brilliant!!
