Los Pacaminos

@ The Marr's Bar, Worcester - 28/9/01

This was the second appearance of this band at The Marr's Bar. Billed as Paul Young (yes, that Paul Young!!) with Los Pacaminos they played a two hour set of what could loosely be described as tex-mex classics and Spanish music. They threw in some original material but the covers they did were ones that practically all the audience could relate to.

They're a seven piece band that play as a band - there's no lead man (not even Mr. Young), they all take solos, and at least five of them have vocal duties. The overall effect, it has to be said, is an extremely tight, professional performance. Performing numbers such as 'Wooly Bully', 'La Bamba', 'You'd Better Move On' and the Jim Reeves classic 'He'll Have To Go', they played with such enthusiasm that it became infectious.

Okay, so what they play may not be to everyone's liking but they certainly know how to party up there on stage and it doesn't take long before the audience picked up on the party mood. To be fair, the moment they walked on stage they'd set out their stall simply with their choice of stage clothes which immediately hinted at what was coming.

We all know Paul Young's pedigree, the other members are mainly session musicians and the list of artists they have performed with is quite impressive. What came across very strongly is that they enjoy what they're doing. They play as if it's some sort of respite from the more gruelling work of touring as Paul Young and from the stressful studio environment.

The party spirit was added to by several of the audience turning up wearing sombreros and ponchos and by the end of the set there'd been mucho downing of Tequila (both on and off stage).

I enjoyed this gig far more than the first time they played this venue. I can't put my finger on what it was but certainly the atmosphere was electric. I wouldn't say that I'm now a convert, but I will definitely go and see them again (here!!).
