Play 90 second soundbite of 'Nervous' @ 'CD quality'
If you break down the Les Valentine sound you get a boldly innovative and catchy backdrop that skips along apace and feels jaunty, bright and 'optimistic'. Add to that Les Valentine's excellent vocal delivery and this lot start to sound just that bit different. The vocals are superb, very obviously comfortable in each other's company and equally at ease with each others harmony, the Les Valentine's 'singists' make a joyous and rich sound. And, 'Nervous' is just the right blend of catchy pop with a raunchy soft-rockin' under-tow - when these 'guys' make a blend they certainly make it 'blend and it definitely stays 'blended'!
So, Les Valentine have a distinctive sound and they can quite obviously pen great music - aint that all they need then? Well not quite! It still takes a great deal of work as a unit to get exactly the right feel and make it sound natural and familiar whilst still retaining a degree of well executed originality and maintaining a 'hookiness'. Hey, guess what. Les Valentine just about get it all spot on; Les Valentine have that something different, they have originality but they also get that familiarly unfamiliar sound that keeps pulling you back, that clever element that comes from the soul of the outfit as well as from the heart of the songs. Yes, Les Valentine fill all the spaces and tick all the boxes - this is a really great new sound and they've still managed to keep it commercial and therefore open to all persuasions.
It's always difficult to be totally positive when all you've got is one track to go by. But, in this case it all felt easy - I can't help but think that Les Valentine just have everything nicely in place and at their fingertips - watch out for Les Valentine they could just prove to be the surprise package this summer and the only thing that makes me 'nervous' is how easy it all sounds!
