When you listen to Led Zeppelin's work now it's hard to believe that, as long ago as 1969, Led Zeppelin were the first truly sustainable 'super group' . Initially there were a few covers of American blues classics carefully intertwined with a few Led Zep originals (quite normal for that progressive era), then, as confidence grew and self-belief established itself we were treated to more and more self-penned works. Of course, by this time Led Zeppelin were established as 'the biggest rock band in the World' - quite right too! Led Zeppelin were pioneers and innovators. They were massively influential and set new standards which others were forced to follow or fall by the wayside. Led Zeppelin became a musical legend almost before its, 'hyped-up' birth. The boys went on to prove to disbelievers that they weren't a 'one trick pony'; Led Zeppelin challenged everything and everyone in their quest to bring 'proper' music to the masses. There were setbacks, there were stumbling blocks but, as we all now know, the pending legend simply would not and could not be stopped. Led Zeppelin truly have their own chapter in music history; their music lives on and will continue to live on!
Ok, so what about 'Mothership'? Well, it's everything it could possibly be - it covers just about every twist and turn of Led Zeppelin's relatively short (only twelve years) but very successful career; yes, from hard rockin' blues to melodic rock ballad, to risky rock-reggae, it's all here. And, it's just a wonderful selection of choice works that totally sum up this extraordinarily talented band. Yes, the tracks have been re-mastered but forget all that shit that people spew out about re-mastering and digital enhancement destroying the essence of the music etc - just enjoy 'Mothership' for exactly what it is, 'the very best of' Led Zeppelin!! Oh, and there's absolutely no point in me typing out the track listing and no point in even trying to pick out highlights here - everyone has their own favourite Led Zep track - most, I'm sure, will be here. 'Mothership' is a magnificent musical story-book in tribute to one of the greatest bands the World has ever seen.
There are gonna be some out there that are gonna get their metaphoric knives out and rip this album apart - just because they can and just because it would be controversial. Take no notice, 'Mothership' is simply Led Zeppelin heaven - a big chunk of musical history - rammed with music that influenced millions - charged with music that changed the world. And yes, it's almost impossible to pull together a 'best of' compilation for Led Zeppelin - but this is as close as it gets to the real deal! The stuff of rock dreams - a glorious musical era laid bare on two CD's and in twenty-four stunning tracks. The legend lives on!!
