Play 90 second soundbite of 'Anymore' @ 'CD quality'
Thompson shows massive talent as a songwriter - she always has! But now, there's a new inner strength and self-belief in her voice and delivery. 'Running Out Of Time' is yet another step in the right direction for Laura Thompson; she uses three session musicians here to add depth and dynamics. It works, her songs are now stuffed, but not overly so, with complimentary guitar, bass, drums and a little programming. The three tracks here, 'Anymore', 'All My Faith' and 'Shape Me' all have a cutting edge feel and sound commercially viable. Previously, Thompson seemed firmly rooted in the solo acoustic world where she might have struggled to break out. Now, she shows her true colours and real potential - her songs and her performances are now almost up there with the real 'big girls' - a place where she has always looked as though she had the talent to be, but now she sounds like she's starting to believe it herself.
Comparisons are bound to be drawn with K T Tunstall and certainly there is a similarity occasionally. But, Thompson is still very much being herself - it's almost as if Tunstall gave Thompson the inspiration to move on and realise her true self. Certainly, Laura Thompson has all the credentials now and hopefully, as she comes to terms with her natural abilities she will move up the ladder several rungs - and rightly so. I've championed Laura Thompson for several years now; she's never once let me down and I really don't think she ever will - this is one talented young lady.
My one criticism, and it's only a small one, is that as a person and as an artist Thompson is quiet and unassuming and sometimes that's reflected in her delivery - she needs to vocally 'let rip' - just a little and just occasionally - to add a touch of emphasis and gritty emotion to her excellent lyrics - it would make all the difference and probably complete the picture.
Superb demo from an extremely talented individual - faultless and tantalising!
