Play 90 second soundbite of 'Touch My Soul (feat, Steve Marriott)' @ 'CD quality'
'Touch My Soul' is a well organised, funked-up melodic cacophony of sounds and styles that uses samples nearly as much as it uses 'real' instrumentation. It works though! Lack Of Afro has contrived to come up with a single that not only crosses genre boundaries but also leaps through decades of time. Featuring samples of the wonderfully soulful voice of the late and great Steve Marriott, (and using front-cover artwork that pays respectful homage to The Small Faces' 'Ogden's Nut Gone Flake' album), and sounds and styles from across the ages of popular music, Lack Of Afro's 'Touch My Soul' messes with the senses as it funks its way into yer head. It's a fascinating piece that is just so bloody catchy!
As if to prove a point, Lack Of Afro continues to funk around in yer head with track two, 'The Outsider' - it leaves me feeling unsure what I've just experienced and what time thresholds I might have crossed on my musical, Lack Of Afro, journey. It's all a wonderfully smart piece of work that brings back great memories but, in the end, you still know that you've just heard something very 'now' and very clever. The single winds up with the album version of 'Touch My Soul' and you just can't help pressing 'play' again. And hey, turn up the db's as much as your cones will allow; this is just great when its loud and proud. Bloody marvellous!!
