Play 90 second soundbite of 'Bang!' @ 'CD quality'
I listened again and it wasn't contrived either - so I listened again and hey, it started to come to me - now, well now, Kyoshi's brazen and infectious music is every bit as good as their press pack suggests. It took a while maybe but it was worth the effort, 'Bang!' and its two accompanying tracks 'Your Own Beat' and 'Up Late' is indeed a wondrous thing!
Kyoshi are a four piece outfit that take indie music to better, less obvious places; Dan, Chris and Ben lay down the ska/indie instrumental 'substance' and allow frontwoman Leanne to add her inimitable vocalisation that makes Kyoshi the special entity that it is. Leanne mixes hip-hop with ska and indie influences and delivers her great lyrics by half rapping and half singing - the end result is mighty cool and very impressive. There's more than a hint of aggression and observational commentary in Kyoshi's songs but, there's also quite a sizeable chunk of quirky good humour to soften the feel - hey it works beautifully - ok, so I only got there after a couple of plays but that's probably just little old me being a bit slow.
I think perhaps Kyoshi initially came as a bit of a shock to me, they just weren't at all what I expected and that threw me somewhat but, I'm there with them now, hooked and reeled in! And, given some decent exposure Kyoshi have the ability to edge their way into the public eyes and ears - if Mike Skinner can do it I don't see why the excellent Kyoshi should miss out - they're every bit as good and possibly even more cool and certainly more varied; musically superb, lyrically brilliant and compositionally challenging - it's a great formula and a sensational end product!
'Bang!' by the excellent Kyoshi has the potential to be massive - I can see this becoming popular in bars and music clubs all over and even, yes even, in some of the more specialist 'dance' clubs - 'Bang!' has all the credentials to mix it up a bit wherever it's heard - crackin' single, great band!!
