Play 90 second soundbite of 'Goin Up The Country' @ 'CD quality'
Kitty, Daisy & Lewis share a love of 50's rock'n'roll and its closely related sub-genre and unsurprisingly this album is exactly that; 50's rock'n'roll revisited. Recorded totally in analogue and therefore it comes with all the 'short-comings' (a debatable issue!) of that technology; the occasional boomy vocal, a slightly reverberating bass and one or two other small 'issues'. Nowt wrong with that, KD&L are open about that but this is where they wanted to go and this is where they went. Ok, the analogue 'treatment' is part and parcel of that by-gone era so that's fine. Hey, these kids do a superb job and this really does feel as though I've taken one giant step back in time, so I guess LD&L have to score highly for that achievement alone. However, I'm not totally convinced that Kitty, Daisy & Lewis are doing the right thing here - shouldn't they be doing rock'n'roll that's more in keeping with the 00's?
Kitty, Daisy & Lewis have tons of natural talent and they quite clearly love and respect the 50's scene and they've done a fantastic job of replicating all the nuances, both good and bad, from that time. But, why?? I'm pretty sure they'll get some good sales (given good promotion and air-time), and I'm confident that they'll pull in decent crowds in the 'live'. But, my gut feeling is that Kitty, Daisy & Lewis should perhaps be respectful of their beloved 50's but they should be doing it with a 00's feel and bring back the age with 'now' technology and 'now' twists!!
Ok, so I've had my moan, now what about this album? Well, Kitty, Daisy & Lewis really do inject some enthusiasm into their work; their individual and combined joy is near-tangible - I'm sure they played with big smiles on their faces and went home (sorry, they were home; this was recorded in their home studio!), went into the 'lounge' with aching faces. I still feel that this album is a little gimmicky and as good as it is, it could be better if it looked forward rather than backward. Kitty, Daisy & Lewis are, without doubt, gifted individuals and if they're capable of this at their current tender ages, they surely must have a great future ahead of them.
This eponymously titled rockin' album by Kitty, Daisy & Lewis is charming and pretty damn impressive. I still think it's a bit 'old hat' and that these three talented kids should be looking to make contemporary, 00's rock'n'roll - then we'd she just how good they are!!
