King With No Throne

White Label

Play 90 second soundbite of 'King With No Throne' @ 'CD quality'

Hmmm, interesting! King With No Throne show a bit of initiative with this release. The way they approach their music reminds me a bit of some of the great bands that grew up in the massive 'Krautrock' explosion of the early 70's such as Amon Duul II. Experimental and absorbingly challenging.

After years of constantly changing line-ups and names, King With No Throne have seemingly returned to basics with just Kasem Chouja (drums) and Reto Wittwer (guitar, synthesizer & vocals); for me, this 'stripped down' configuration works bloody well. King With No Throne couldn't really be considered as a commercial outfit; theirs is music for the mind rather than for the feet. I have very little information about this 'White Label' release other than the track listing of 'King With No Throne', 'Together' and 'Train'. But there again, too much info can often cloud the issue; here, all I've really got is the music - which I like.

King With No Throne lay down dramatic yet often somewhat understated soundscapes using effectively pulse like drumming washed over with droning synths, soaring guitars and mournful sounding voices (somewhat similar to a switched-off Jim Morrison). In fact, their music is a little like some of the more leftfield Doors album material. The overall feel is quite lo-fi for this type of music - and even that seems to work well. King With No Throne are certainly different in the way they approach their craft but I'm finding the whole thing very likeable - this'll certainly be getting a few plays from me over the next few days and weeks.

King With No Throne are a bit of a musical enigma; they aint gonna be chart toppers, they're not gonna be to everyone's taste. But those out there that like a bit of experimental post/rock (whatever that is!), music for the mind and spirit that's not self-indulgent, this could just right.
