Play 90 second soundbite of 'Electric Lady' by Kila @ 'CD quality'
Opening with a stunning Kila's instrumental track, 'Electric Lady', taken from their 'Gambler's Ballet' album and the scene is set - wonderfully bright instrumentation set against the nu-trad backdrop as Kila show the way forward in excellent spirit and fine style. This quite brilliant melding of old and new is typical of Kila and it's easy to see why this band keep on receiving awards and plaudits for their ground-breaking music.
'Giving' by Kila vocalist Colm O'Snodaigh follows; whispery voices set against a beautifully proportioned backdrop as Colm tests his range with this haunting number. Taken from his album of the same name, 'Giving' is short but sweet and pretty much typifies the rest of the brilliant album.
Kila piper Eoin Dillon is up next with his 'Joxers Parrelel' from his 'The Third Twin' album. No great surprise to find that 'Joxers Parrelel' is pipe driven; up-tempo with some steamin' pipe work, Dillon keeps it very Irish but manages to make the piece very up-to-date with his attacking delivery.
Kila guitarist Ronan O'Snodaigh brings this excellent sampler to a furious end with 'Row Away' from 'The Last Mile Home'; this is punchy, beaty and bloody compelling. Although essentially an acoustic work, Ronan's stabbing vocal delivery finds him venturing towards a rock feel. Catchy and instantly recognisable, 'Row Away' is a great and typical introductory piece from Ronan O'Snodaigh.
So, sample away. But, please don't stop there! This excellent four track sampler only just scrapes the surface of what's really on offer from Kila and the Kila 'boys'. Each artist's music is as individual as hell and yet when they come together as Kila there's a unity and understanding that hold Kila firmly in the nu-trad Irish genre. Great sampler this - Kila and 'friends' show great variety and brilliant musicianship - try it then look at the bigger picture and seek out the albums for yourself - if you appreciate a bit of Irish, if you like to push at the envelope, if you enjoy 'electric' traditional folk the Kila and the break-aways will give you what you need!!
