Play 90 second soundbite of 'Perfume' @ 'CD quality'
As this promotional work kicks off with 'Superbug' I find myself just a little unsure of where Karim Fanous is aiming; 'Superbug' has a funky, jazzy edge to it but the slightly off-beat approach takes some getting used to and is therefore not the most commercial of songs. Things get easier to take with the excellent 'Perfume'; this is definitely a more conventionally crafted song. Fanous' vocals are pretty much to the fore on this gutsy, rockin' work-out which is definitely the most commercial track on offer here. 'Sometimes' brings the audio side of this promo work to a close with some style; its' a slow, emotional piece with balladic tendencies and it's a real worker.
Given the choice, I would have put 'Perfume' as the opening track as it's the one track which has immediate impact and accessibility. This, superbly packaged, promo copy comes complete with a cool DVD of 'Perfume' which gives Fanous virgins a chance to see what the guy looks like albeit in a 'staged' environment - nice vid though!!
Karim Fanous is pretty fine all-rounder. As a multi-instrumentalist he seems to have a great feel for the individual dynamics of the instruments deployed on each track. The final mix, which initially sounds a little strange, tends to favour Fanous' vocals . But, the overall result is one that works pretty damn well; as a promo 'Superbug', 'Perfume' and 'Sometimes' will whet the appetite of many and open up a few new doors for Karim Fanous.
Karim Fanous has all the tools he needs to make it to higher places. He's an impressive songsmith and extremely competent musician and vocalist - if his backers show similar dedication to Fanous' cause, I can see the name Karim Fanous becoming pretty familiar around town.
