Play 90 second soundbite of 'Around The World' @ 'CD quality'
'Around The World' is a great, hand-clappin' pop-rock work with instant appeal and more than a hint of anthemic qualities. Kalliopi gives a great breathy, quite sultry and sexy performance here; she's supported with a wonderfully sympathetic rockin' backdrop that gives the piece grit but never over-shadows Kalliopi's expressive vocals. Just a hint of retro about this track but it's still a damn fine outing that could and should do well.
Kalliopi goes on to show her 'global' side by daring to cover a song first recorded by the late, great, Dusty Springfield - and, what a great job she does with it!! Kalliopi somehow manages to make this one sound exactly what it is - an old song done with today's rockin' power and pop sensibility. Kalliopi's version has the punkish nuances of Hazel O'Connor combined with the raw rock of The Velvet Underground - hey, it's a cracker!! Then, Kalliopi invests some of her Greek origins in 'Fire And Sea'; a wonderfully, Cranberries-ish slow grinder. Impressive voice, very impressive delivery and a very impressive way of tying influences together in a very 'now' sensible way.
Kalliopi has impressed me muchly with 'Around The World' but, more than that, her decision to throw in the other two pretty diverse works in nothing short of inspired! 'Around The World' by the wonderfully well-equipped talent that is Kalliopi is a stonkin' good release and I really hope that Kalliopi continues with her varied repertoire - refreshingly different and potentially a new 'star'.
