Play 90 second soundbite of '(Can You Feel The) Magic (Radio Mix)' @ 'CD quality'
Incessant drum and bass riffs carry with them a multitude of electronica to combine as a massive backdrop for the beautifully dreamy vocals of Marilyn Albuny. As a dance piece the opening mix certainly has all the required elements to create a storm; the longer of the two mixes it gives ample time for the dance freaks to really 'get down'. It's easy to visualise masses of smoothly flexing limbs breaking the smokey atmosphere as rods of laser lights scorch down amongst strobes and filtered beams to the pulsing vibes of Kald's 'Magic'. However, although superbly crafted I feel that this version doesn't make any really original statements about Kald and their craft; sure it's good, very good, but it does to sound like so many other dance grooves and doesn't have much to set it apart.
For me, track two, 'The Radio Mix' is by far the more interesting and certainly more commercial mix. It's very dynamic with loads going on and I can easily envisage this version oozing its way from the speakers via Radio Stations anywhere. I actually find the 'Radio Mix' more appealing on many fronts; it retains a hypnotic quality whilst cleverly introducing a somewhat more sensual feel. The addition of a few extra instruments helps it commercially. Shorter but somehow more poignant the 'Radio Mix' is pretty stunning - it holds the attention throughout with its subtly changing moods. Kald have done very well here to turn a pretty good song into an impressive dreamscape suitable for the masses rather than just the club-ites.
Kald have a strong overall sound but it's Albuny's use of sensual vocals that really steals the show. Kald will surely make a big impression on the club scene but here they've shown that they have the potential to excite and thrill in the open market place too.
